Latin Year Eleven (no longer year ten!)

Dear Year Elevens

I promised you some holiday work...

Those of you who knew your set texts should probably look through them at the start of September; we'll have completed the set texts by the end of September.

Some of you need to go over the set texts again and memorise them ; you know who you are.

Everybody should learn as much of the vocabulary as you can; test yourself regularly!

I think there may be a few students who know all the vocabulary; you need to work through the grammar in Book 4.

Latin Year Ten; advice for the summer

Dear students

When I met you at the end of term, I mentioned the key section of Book One for you to look at.

Pages 180-181 deal with nouns. In English we use WORD ORDER to tell us which noun is the subject (nominative) and which is the object (accusative.) For example, the dog ate the frog OR the frog ate the dog. In Latin, the ENDINGS of the two nouns tell us which is the subject and which is the object. These endings are on page 180 and you should learn them.

Similarly we use the preposition TO where Latin uses the DATIVE ending. This is also on page 180.

Pages 182-184 deal with verbs. Latin rarely uses pronouns (I, you etc.) These are indicated by endings and the table on page 183 should be studied and memorised.

You could also read ALL the sections in English at the end of the 12 stages.
